Before the outbreak of the second world war, my Polish father and his younger brother, ran away from their home and joined the Polish Free Army, my Uncle had lied about his age in order to join up. They served in Monte Cassino in Italy, and there my Uncle was killed. In his memories of his brothers death, my father always blamed himself, but sadly he died suddenly, before we were able to visit Monte Cassino to try and find his brothers grave. I was able to visit Monte Cassino some years ago, but sadly could not find a grave so placed my cross on the tomb of the unknown fallen. My father and uncle were the reason I became a Poppy seller, and have been selling poppies for over 30 years. By pinning a poppy onto a persons lapel, I hope that people remember not just those whose names are on memorials, but also those who have no marker to show where they fell and who they were. This simple necklace is my tribute, and the prototype for it was sent to the patron of the Royal British Legion, Her Majesty the Queen, I was honoured to receive a letter from her Majesty, acknowledging the gift and wishing every success for the venture. It is a simple design of two rows of black seed beads, embellished with pressed glass poppies and leaves. The kit is available with complete instructions, KO beading thread, size 11 seed beads, pressed glass leaves and flowers, fastener and jump rings. The cost of the kit is £12.50 with £2.50 of the cost being donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
